Mathematical skills are needed to manage ordinary human relations. These mathematical skills involve translating, organizing, and problem-solving (analytical thinking and creative thinking). These skills are frequently applied in answering word problems. Brain-based learning theory was used in the study as a concept to study the mathematical skills of the learners. This study determined the relationship between the respondents’ characteristics (gender, attitude towards Mathematics, type of previous school, and Math supports) and level of mathematical skills (translating, organizing, and problem-solving skills). From the 950 randomly picked Grade 11 respondents, 447 students coming from ABM, HUMSS, and STEM strands participated in the study. Survey questionnaires were used for data collection. Findings revealed that the students had positive attitude towards Mathematics but had negative perception about math support. The students had excellent translating skills and fair organizing and problem-solving skills. Overall, the students had fair mathematical skills. Among the students’ characteristics, attitude towards Math and Math support were significantly correlated with mathematical skills. Results of this study provide relevant information, paths, and opportunities to further enhance students’ mathematical skills.
Keywords: mathematical skills; math support; translating skills; organizing skills; problem-solving skills
